The name is unrelated to that of the Mus genus, instead being derived from the Greek ἀπό-δημος (literally away from home The wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) is a murid rodent native to Europe and northwestern Africa. It is closely related to the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) but differs in that it has no band of yellow fur around the neck, has slightly smaller ears, and is usually slightly smaller overall: around 90 mm (3.54 in) in length and 23 g in weight. Lastly, dominant/subordinate relationships must be considered. There is a report of laboratory group housing of long-tailed field mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), in which three subordinate mice were observed to avoid the time of peak out-of-burrow activity of a dominant mouse (Bovet, 1972). Despite being one of our most common woodland mammals, the small, sweet and secretive wood mouse is hard to spot. They feast on nuts, seeds and invertebrates and are an important food source for larger mammals and birds of prey.

Contrary to published records, A. sylvaticus is not part of the modern Israeli fauna (Filippucci et al., 1989). Tchernov (1979, 1986, 1994, 1996), however, maintains it is and is also represented there by fossils from middle to late Pleistocene cave sediments (late Acheullan to Upper Mousterian), and from 40,000 to 10,000 years B.C.
